MOVING HOME, SWEET HOME

2023-06-07

There’s been a lot of chatter about consumer migratory patterns in the U.S. as influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic – the mass exodus from large cities, northerners flocking South, etc. Despite these speculations, one Law of Moving remains unchanged: most consumers who move remain in their home state. But, we wondered, which state’s residents are most likely to stay in their home state during a move?  Time for a deep data dive …

Turns out, movers from Texas prefer to remain Texans. Texas topped our list with 72.3% of its moves being in-state. Many factors influence these results, but we can say with certainty it’s not just the geographic appeal of the Southwest. New Mexico – right next door to Texas – nearly bottoms out at 43rd on our list.

Hover over the states in our interactive map to see whether your home state’s residents are staying put or moving to a different state.
